Convert MKV to MP3
MKV · MP3 · M4A · WAV · FLAC · OGG · OGA · WebM · AAC · OPUS · MP4 · MOV
Converting happens in your browser, so your file never leaves your device. Transcribing uploads the audio to SeaMeet.
Choose an MKV, such as an OBS recording, and your browser saves its first audio track as an MP3.
How it works
- Choose the MKV file, for example an OBS recording.
- Pick the quality and select Convert & download.
- Save the MP3, or transcribe the speech.
OBS recordings and other MKV files
OBS Studio has long used MKV as its default recording format, and many streamers, teachers and gamers leave it that way, because an MKV survives a crash: if the computer freezes mid-stream, the part already recorded is still readable. Other screen recorders and video tools use MKV too. The catch is that MKV is a container many phones, editors and audio players won't touch.
An MKV can carry more than one audio track. OBS, for example, can record your microphone, the game or desktop sound and a music feed as separate tracks. This converter keeps the first audio track, which in most setups is the full mix, and writes it as an MP3. If you need another track, make it the first one in the recorder next time, or export it from a video editor.
The file is read piece by piece in your browser and never uploaded to convert. For a recorded stream, a lesson or a podcast session, Transcribe this file passes the audio to SeaMeet and returns a transcript you can search and quote.
Questions
Is the MKV uploaded anywhere?
No. Conversion happens inside your browser tab, using your own machine, so the MKV stays on your disk. The only upload is optional: choosing Transcribe this file sends the audio to SeaMeet for the transcript.
Can I convert a stream that ran for hours?
Yes. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no size cap for converting, only the free storage your device needs for the MP3. For transcription, each file has to stay within 512 MB and 5 hours.
My MKV has several audio tracks. Which one is converted?
The first one. In OBS that is usually the main mix of microphone and desktop sound. If you recorded your voice on a separate track and want only that, make it the first track in the recording settings, or split it out in a video editor.
Why does OBS save MKV instead of MP4?
Because an MKV that stops suddenly, after a crash or a power cut, can still be read up to that point, while an interrupted MP4 often can't. OBS can remux the file to MP4 later, but for the sound alone, converting to MP3 here is enough.
