Compress audio

MP3 · WAV · M4A · FLAC · OGG · OGA · WebM · AAC · OPUS · MP4 · MOV · MKV

Converting happens in your browser, so your file never leaves your device. Transcribing uploads the audio to SeaMeet.

Choose an audio file and save a smaller MP3 of it, compressed on your own device.

How it works

  1. Choose the audio file you want to make smaller.
  2. Pick a size, keep Mono for speech, then compress.
  3. Save the smaller MP3, or transcribe it.

Small enough to email, clear enough to understand

Audio gets too big in predictable places: an email that caps attachments, a form that only takes small files, a chat app that refuses long recordings, or a phone that is nearly full. Compressing re-encodes the sound as an MP3 with a lower bitrate, so the same recording takes far less space.

For speech, such as lectures, meetings, interviews and voice memos, the smaller settings in Mono stay clear, because a voice doesn't need stereo or a wide frequency range. For music, keep Mono off and pick a higher setting. The converter shows the expected size before you start, and warns you when a file is already small enough that compressing it again won't help.

Everything happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded to compress it. A compressed recording also uploads faster if you decide to transcribe it next with SeaMeet.

Questions

Is the audio uploaded to compress it?

No. Compression runs in your browser on your device, and the file never leaves it. Only if you select Transcribe this file is the audio uploaded to SeaMeet.

Is there a maximum file size?

Not for compressing, since nothing is uploaded. Your device needs free storage for the smaller MP3. Transcription has its own limits of 512 MB and 5 hours per file.

Which setting should I pick?

For speech, the recommended setting with Mono on is clear and small. For an extra-small voice file, pick the smallest setting. For music, turn Mono off and choose the highest setting.

Why didn't my file get much smaller?

It was probably compressed already, like most voice notes and streaming downloads. Encoding it again can't remove much more and costs some quality. The converter warns you before you start when that is likely.
