Sample output

00:00 Maya Thanks for joining. Let's start with the launch date.

00:04 Daniel Design is done, but the store listing still needs screenshots.

00:10 Maya Can we have those by Friday?

00:13 Daniel Yes, if marketing sends the final copy tomorrow.

00:18 Priya I'll send it tonight.

00:21 Maya Great. Then the launch date stays where it is.

The team keeps the launch date. Design is finished, and the store screenshots will be ready by Friday once marketing sends the final copy, which Priya sends tonight.

How it works

  1. Choose the Signal voice message you saved from the chat.
  2. Set the spoken language or keep detection on, then press Transcribe.
  3. Read the Signal message as text in your library.

Signal voice messages, read instead of replayed

Signal has no transcription of its own, so an English voice message, or one in another language, needs saving before it can become text. On Android, open the chat's shared media and save it from Audio; on iPhone, tap and hold it and use the share icon; in Signal Desktop, use More actions. Choose the file here, set the spoken language or leave detection on, and press Transcribe.

What Signal gives you depends on who recorded the note: a message sent from an Android phone arrives as an .aac file, and one sent from an iPhone as an .m4a file. Both upload here unchanged, whichever device you saved it on.

A long Signal voice message is hard to skim, and replaying it to find one detail takes time. Once transcribed, the note becomes text in your library: labelled by speaker if more than one voice is on it, with a summary and chapters for a long message, and kept alongside your other recordings. If the language guess looks wrong, one click transcribes it again in the language you choose.

Questions

How do I transcribe an English Signal voice note?

Save the voice message from Signal: through the chat's shared media on Android, the share icon on iPhone, or More actions in Signal Desktop. Choose the saved file here, set the language to English or keep detection on and press Transcribe, signing in free if the page asks.

Can Signal transcribe voice messages?

No. Signal has no built-in transcription of voice messages on Android, iPhone or desktop. To read one as text, save the voice message from the chat, choose it on this page, pick the spoken language or keep detection on, and press Transcribe.

How do I save a voice message from Signal on Android?

Tap the chat's name and open its shared media. Go to Audio, select the voice message, open the menu and tap Save. Then come back to this page and choose the saved file with the file picker.

What format is a Signal voice message?

It depends on the sender's phone: voice messages recorded on Android are .aac files, and those recorded on an iPhone are .m4a files. Either one uploads here as it is, with no conversion step.

Is there a free way to transcribe Signal voice messages?

Yes. A free account has 6 h of transcription in total and up to 10 files a day. Each transcript shows its first 15 min; Sync Pro opens the rest.
