Why so many voice messages are Opus
Opus is an audio codec designed for speech and music sent over the internet. It sounds clear at very low bitrates, which is why messaging apps rely on it: WhatsApp has recorded its voice messages in Opus for years, and many other chat and calling apps do the same.
Because the files are so small, even a long voice note or a recorded call takes only a tiny share of the 512 MB limit. The length limit of 5 h is the one that matters, and very few voice messages come anywhere near it. If a voice note is part of a longer conversation, upload each note on its own; every file becomes its own transcript in your library.
Opus audio is not always saved with an .opus ending. Some apps and phones store the same audio in an OGG container with an .ogg or .oga extension, and browser recorders put it inside WebM. All of these upload here without conversion, so there is no need to turn a voice note into MP3 first.

Questions
What is an .opus file in WhatsApp?
It is a voice message. WhatsApp records voice notes with the Opus codec, and when you save or export one, the file often ends in .opus. You can upload it here as it is and read it as text.
Is Opus the same as OGG?
Not exactly. Opus is the codec that compresses the sound, and OGG is a container that often carries it. Files ending in .opus, .ogg or .oga all upload here and are transcribed the same way.
Does it work for short voice notes?
Yes. Short clips work like any other file, and each one uses free hours equal to its length. If you have many short notes, keep in mind that the free plan allows up to 10 files a day.
Can I transcribe Opus files for free?
You can start free. Your account has 6 h of transcription in total, and on the free plan you read the first 15 min of each transcript, which covers most voice messages in full.
