Where WebM audio comes from

Web browsers can record sound on their own, without extra software, and the format they reach for is usually WebM. That is why online voice recorders, browser extensions that capture a tab, and some meeting and call tools hand you a .webm file when you save a recording.

WebM audio is compact, so long recordings stay well under the 512 MB limit, and the length limit of 5 h is the one that matters. If a tool lets you choose between WebM and MP3, either works here; pick whichever the tool exports without extra steps.

Some players on your computer will not open a .webm file, which can make it look broken. That does not affect the upload, because the transcription reads the audio directly. If a WebM file really has no sound, for example a capture made with the microphone muted, there is nothing to transcribe, so play the start of it in your browser first if you are unsure.

Questions

My browser recorder saved a WebM file. Will it work?

Yes, as long as the file contains audio. Choose it here like any other recording, set the spoken language and press Transcribe. There is no need to convert it to MP3 first.

Why won't my computer play the WebM file?

Some desktop players do not support WebM, even though every major browser does. Open the file in your browser to check it has sound. The upload does not depend on your player, so the file can still be transcribed.

Does a WebM file have audio?

It can hold sound only, or video with a sound track. Either way, only the audio is transcribed: for a WebM video, the audio track is taken out in your browser and only that uploads.

Is WebM transcription free?

You can start free. Your account has 6 h of transcription in total and up to 10 files a day, and free transcripts show the first 15 min of each file.
