Getting an M4A out of Voice Memos
Voice Memos on iPhone records in M4A. To get a file you can upload, open the recording, tap the share button and, under Options, choose Rendered. Apple describes this as mixing all audio effects and layers into an .m4a file, which is exactly what the transcription needs. Save it somewhere you can find it, then pick it when you choose a file on this page.
M4A holds compressed AAC audio, so memos stay small even when they run long; a lecture or interview recorded on a phone is usually far below the 512 MB limit. Many Android recorder apps and dictation apps save M4A too, and those files upload the same way.
If your iPhone already shows its own transcript for a memo, you can still upload the file here to get speaker labels, a summary and chapters, kept in your library with the rest of your recordings. You choose the spoken language or let us detect it.

Questions
How do I transcribe voice memos on iPhone?
Open the memo in Voice Memos, tap the share button, choose Options and select Rendered, then save the file. Open this page in Safari, tap Choose a file and pick the memo. Set the language and press Transcribe.
Is M4A the same as AAC?
Not quite. M4A is the file wrapper, and in most cases AAC is the audio inside it. Both upload here, so there is no need to convert between them before you transcribe.
Can I transcribe an M4A for free?
Yes, with limits. Your account has 6 h of free transcription in total, and each memo uses hours equal to its length. On the free plan you read the first 15 min of each transcript.
How long can a voice memo be?
Up to 5 h and 512 MB per file. Because M4A is compressed, the length limit is usually the one you reach first, not the size limit, so long memos rarely need splitting.
