How it works

  1. Choose your Cantonese recording: a radio interview, a podcast or a WhatsApp voice note.
  2. The Hong Kong Chinese entry, which transcribes Cantonese, is selected; press Transcribe.
  3. Read the transcript by speaker, or download it as SRT subtitles.

Written Cantonese, not standard written Chinese

Cantonese (廣東話) is written two ways: in colloquial characters that follow the speech, such as 嘅, 咗, 唔, 嚟 and 我哋, or rewritten into standard written Chinese. This page gives you the first. When we tested it, the transcript kept the spoken Cantonese forms instead of converting them, so what you read is close to what was said. If you need formal written Chinese for a report, edit the text afterwards; it is not converted for you.

The page starts on the picker's Chinese (Traditional, Hong Kong) entry, which transcribes Cantonese into Traditional characters. If you prefer Simplified characters, as many Guangzhou readers do, choose Cantonese (Simplified) instead. Both handle Cantonese speech, whether the speaker is from Hong Kong, Macau or Guangdong. A recording that is mostly Mandarin belongs on the Chinese page.

Cantonese files come from radio and podcast interviews, WhatsApp voice notes, church and community talks, and family recordings. English words are common in Hong Kong speech, and they tend to stay in Latin letters. Check names and slang against the recording, then use the SRT subtitles or the transcript by speaker.

Questions

Will the transcript use written Cantonese or standard written Chinese?

Written Cantonese. Colloquial characters such as 嘅, 咗, 唔 and 我哋 stay in the text, so it reads like the speech. The transcript is not rewritten into formal written Chinese, so edit it yourself if a report needs that register.

Traditional or Simplified characters?

The Hong Kong entry that this page starts on writes Traditional characters. Choose Cantonese (Simplified) in the picker if you want Simplified characters. Both are Cantonese transcription; only the script changes.

What if my recording isn't in Cantonese?

Choose the language that is spoken, or pick automatic detection. For Mandarin, use Chinese instead of the Cantonese entries. If the transcript sounds like a different language, one click transcribes the file again in that language.

What happens to English words in Cantonese speech?

Keep the language on Cantonese when most of the talk is Cantonese. English words that people mix into their sentences usually stay in Latin letters. Check brand names and nicknames against the recording before you quote anyone.

Is Cantonese transcription free?

Yes, within the free limits. Your account has 6 h of transcription in total, and the free plan shows the first 15 min of each transcript. Sync Pro unlocks full transcripts for long interviews and talks.
