How it works

  1. Choose your Mandarin recording: a WeChat voice note, a class or a team call.
  2. Chinese (Simplified) is already selected; press Transcribe.
  3. Read the transcript by speaker, or download it as SRT subtitles.

Simplified or Traditional, and how to fix names

This page starts on Chinese (Simplified, China), which transcribes Mandarin (普通话) into Simplified characters. If you read Traditional characters, choose Chinese (Traditional, Taiwan) in the picker instead: the speech is handled the same way and the text comes back in Traditional characters. Cantonese is a different spoken language with its own entry, so a Cantonese file belongs on the Cantonese page.

Names are the most common fix in a Chinese transcript, because many characters share a sound. For Mandarin, the options under the picker have a names and terms field and a short context line. Add the people, products and places in your recording before you press Transcribe, and they are more likely to be written the way you expect. A line such as a weekly product meeting also helps.

Chinese conversations often carry English product names, abbreviations and brands, and these usually stay in Latin letters inside the Chinese text. Keep the language on Chinese when most of the talk is Mandarin. Files tend to come from WeChat voice notes, online classes, interviews and team calls; the transcript and the SRT subtitles keep the characters you chose.

Questions

What if my recording isn't in Mandarin?

Choose the language that is spoken, or pick automatic detection. For Cantonese, use the Cantonese entry rather than Chinese. If the transcript sounds like a different language from the one you chose, one click transcribes the file again in that language.

Will I get Simplified or Traditional characters?

It depends on the picker. Chinese (Simplified, China) gives Simplified characters, and Chinese (Traditional, Taiwan) gives Traditional characters. Both transcribe Mandarin, so choose the script you want to read before you press Transcribe.

How do I get names and terms right?

Open the options under the language picker and add names, product names and specialist terms to the names and terms field, plus a short line about what the recording is. These fields appear for Mandarin only. Check any remaining names against your notes afterwards.

Can I get pinyin?

No. The transcript is written in Chinese characters, not pinyin. If you need pinyin for study, convert the parts you want with a separate tool once you have checked the characters.

Is Chinese transcription free?

Yes, within the free limits: 6 h of transcription in total, and the first 15 min of each transcript readable on the free plan. Sync Pro unlocks the whole transcript for longer lectures and meetings.
