How it works

  1. Choose your Ukrainian recording: a Telegram voice message, a podcast or an online meeting.
  2. Ukrainian is already selected; press Transcribe, or let SeaMeet detect it.
  3. Read the transcript by speaker, or download it as SRT subtitles.

Ukrainian letters, the apostrophe and Russian mixed in

Choose Ukrainian (українська мова), or let SeaMeet detect it. In our test the transcript came back in Ukrainian Cyrillic, with the letters that set it apart from Russian: і, ї, є and ґ. Words such as пʼятниця or сімʼя carry an apostrophe, and it may come out as the modifier letter ʼ or as a typewriter-style apostrophe. If a publisher or a university asks for one form, replace it across the text once you have read it.

Plenty of Ukrainians switch between Ukrainian and Russian in one conversation, and some speak surzhyk, a mix of the two. Each file is transcribed in one language, and automatic detection picks one as well, so choose the language most of the talk is in. Russian words inside Ukrainian speech are written as they are heard and are worth a second look.

The recordings are often Telegram voice messages, podcasts, online meetings between colleagues in different countries, interviews for journalism or research, and calls with family abroad. WhatsApp's published list for its own voice transcription doesn't include Ukrainian as of now, and Telegram's Premium speech-to-text publishes no language list, so a saved voice note can be uploaded here and kept in your Library. The SRT subtitles use the same text as the transcript, with cue times from the spoken words.

Questions

What if my recording isn't in Ukrainian?

Choose the language that is spoken in the list, or pick automatic detection. If the transcript sounds like another language, one click transcribes the same file again in that language, without a second upload.

Does it tell Ukrainian from Russian?

Choose Ukrainian when most of the talk is Ukrainian; in our test the transcript came back in Ukrainian spelling with і, ї, є and ґ. When a speaker switches to Russian for a while, those passages are written as heard, so check them. A mostly Russian call should use Russian.

Why does the apostrophe look different in some words?

Ukrainian writes an apostrophe in words like пʼятниця and сімʼя, and there are two common characters for it. The transcript may use either one. If your editor or publisher wants a single form, use find and replace after you have checked the text.

How do I transcribe a Telegram voice message in Ukrainian?

In the Telegram desktop app, right-click the voice message, choose Save As and pick a folder. On a phone, tap and hold the voice message, tap Select, then the share icon, and save it to Files or Drive. Choose that file here and press Transcribe.

Is Ukrainian transcription free?

Yes, within the free limits: a free account has 6 h of transcription in total, and the first 15 min of each transcript are readable on the free plan. Sync Pro unlocks full transcripts.
