How it works

  1. Choose your Punjabi file: a WhatsApp voice note, a family call or an interview.
  2. Punjabi (پنجابی) is already selected; press Transcribe.
  3. Read the Shahmukhi transcript by speaker, or download it as SRT subtitles.

Shahmukhi, not Gurmukhi: read this before you upload

The transcript is written in Shahmukhi, the right-to-left Perso-Arabic script Punjabi is written in across Pakistan (پنجابی). The picker's entry is Punjabi from Pakistan, and in our own test clip the text came back in Shahmukhi, not in Gurmukhi. If you write Punjabi in Gurmukhi, as most readers in Indian Punjab and many Sikh families abroad do, know this up front: the page gives you Shahmukhi letters, and turning them into Gurmukhi is a separate step with a separate tool.

The picker has one Punjabi entry, so a recording from Amritsar or Ludhiana uses it too: expect Shahmukhi text, and some words may be spelled the Pakistani way. That can be enough to check what was said or to find a passage in a long recording, but plan for a conversion if the text is going to Gurmukhi readers, and have someone who reads both scripts check the names. In Lahore and Faisalabad many speakers slide between Punjabi and Urdu, with English words like hall and list in between. Choose the language spoken most, because automatic detection settles on one language per file.

Typical files are WhatsApp voice notes from relatives, long family calls between Pakistan and the UK, Canada or the Gulf, interviews for oral-history projects, and recorded mushairas and community gatherings. As of now, WhatsApp's published list for its own voice message transcripts doesn't include Punjabi, so a saved voice note can be uploaded here instead. The SRT subtitles keep the Shahmukhi text, right to left, with times from the spoken words.

Questions

Will the transcript be in Gurmukhi?

No. The picker's Punjabi is Punjabi from Pakistan, and the transcript is written in Shahmukhi (Perso-Arabic script), right to left. If your readers use Gurmukhi, convert the checked text with a transliteration tool and have someone who reads both scripts look over the names.

Can I upload Punjabi spoken in India?

Yes. The picker has one Punjabi entry, Punjabi from Pakistan, so choose it for East Punjabi speech too; expect the transcript in Shahmukhi. Some words may be spelled the way they are in Pakistan, so check local terms and names if the text is meant for readers in India.

What if my file isn't in Punjabi?

Choose the spoken language, for example Urdu, Hindi or English, or pick automatic detection. If the result sounds like another language, one click transcribes the same file again in that language.

What about Punjabi mixed with Urdu or English?

Automatic detection settles on one language for the whole file, so choose the one spoken most. Keep Punjabi when most of the talk is Punjabi, even with Urdu sentences or English words in between, and check those parts before you share the text.

How much Punjabi can I transcribe free?

A free account includes 6 h of transcription in total, counted by the length of each file, and shows the first 15 min of every transcript. Sync Pro unlocks the rest of longer recordings.
