MP4 recordings from meetings, phones and screens
Meeting recordings, screen recordings and phone videos usually come as MP4 files with AAC sound. That combination is the simplest case for us: the audio track is copied out on your device exactly as it is, with no re-encoding, so the transcript works from the original sound.
Because only the audio is sent, the size of the MP4 itself does not count against the 512 MB limit; the extracted audio does. A long meeting that is very large as a video file often turns into a modest audio upload. The length limit is 5 h.
Some MP4 files have no sound track at all, for example a screen capture made without the microphone. There is nothing to transcribe in that case, and the page tells you before anything uploads. Others use an audio codec we cannot read yet; exporting the clip again with AAC audio fixes that. Very long MP4 files are easiest to prepare on a computer, where the browser has more memory to work with than on a phone.

Questions
Is my whole MP4 uploaded?
No. Only the audio track is copied out of the MP4 in your browser and uploaded, and the 512 MB limit applies to that audio. The picture stays on your device, which is why even a large MP4 can be transcribed.
Can I transcribe an MP4 on my phone?
Yes, in a current mobile browser. Phones have less memory for preparing the audio, so a very long MP4 may be refused with a note to use a computer or to export the audio instead.
How do I transcribe MP4 to text for free?
Choose the MP4 and press Transcribe, and sign in free if the page asks. The audio uses free hours equal to its length, out of 6 h in total, and on the free plan you read the first 15 min of the transcript.
Why does my MP4 say there is no audio?
The file has no sound track, which happens with screen captures made while the microphone was off. Check that you hear sound when you play it. If it does play sound, export it again as MP4 with AAC audio and try again.
