00:00 Lecturer Today we look at why rivers bend instead of running straight.

00:06 Lecturer Water moves faster on the outside of a curve, so it wears that bank away.

00:14 Student So the inside of the bend collects the sand and gravel?

00:20 Lecturer Exactly. Over time the curve grows, and that is how a meander forms.

00:26 Student Can a meander ever cut itself off?

00:31 Lecturer Yes. When two bends meet, the river takes the shortcut and leaves a lake.

Rivers bend because faster water on the outside of a curve wears that bank away, while the inside collects sand and gravel. The curve grows into a meander, and when two bends meet, the river cuts through and leaves a lake.

How it works

  1. Choose the lecture recording, such as an M4A from your phone.
  2. Set the language of the lecture, then press Transcribe.
  3. Read the transcript and jump between chapters.

Recording lectures that transcribe well

Sit near the front, or place your phone close to the lecturer rather than on your own desk at the back. Distance and room echo cause most transcription errors in lecture halls, and a phone near the speaker often does better than a good microphone far away. Questions from the audience are hard to catch, so it helps when the lecturer repeats them.

A whole lecture fits in a file of up to 5 h, so a long session does not need splitting. Chapters break the transcript into topics, and the summary gives you a starting point for revision notes; compare both with your slides and fill in what the lecturer stressed. A course taught in another language works the same way: pick it from the list of 55, or leave detection on, and if the file turns out to be in a different language, one click runs it again in that one.

Many universities and schools limit recording, so check the rules of your course and ask the lecturer before you record. Some courses already publish their own recordings; if yours does, you can upload that file instead of recording your own, as long as the course allows it.

Questions

Can I transcribe a whole lecture without splitting it?

Yes. A file can be up to 5 h long and 512 MB, which covers most lectures and seminars. If a recording runs longer, split it at a break and upload the parts in turn; each becomes its own transcript.

Can AI turn a lecture recording into notes?

It gives you a starting point. Along with the transcript you get a summary and chapters that group the lecture by topic. Treat them as a draft for your notes and check details such as formulas and names against the recording.

Does the transcript show who is speaking in a lecture?

Yes. The lecturer and anyone who speaks up get their own labels. Questions from the back of the room are often quiet, so they may be missing or labelled less reliably than the lecturer's voice.

Is there a free way to transcribe lectures to text?

Yes, with limits. Your account has 6 h of free transcription in total and up to 10 files a day, and you read the first 15 min of each transcript. Sync Pro unlocks full lectures.

Can I transcribe college lectures?

Yes, where your college allows recording. Check the course rules and ask the lecturer first. Once you have the file, upload it here and choose the language of the lecture, or let us detect it.
