How it works

  1. Choose a Cebuano recording: a family voice message, a barangay meeting or an interview.
  2. Cebuano is already selected; press Transcribe, or switch to Filipino first.
  3. Read the transcript by speaker, or download it as SRT subtitles.

Bisaya, Sinugbuanon and the English in between

Cebuano goes by several names: Bisaya or Binisaya to most of its speakers, Sinugbuanon in formal writing. It is one entry in the picker, used for recordings from Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, parts of Leyte and much of Mindanao, Davao included. Regional words and accents differ, so read names and local terms through. Hiligaynon and Waray are separate languages and aren't in the list.

The transcript is written in the Latin alphabet and stays in Cebuano; it is not translated into English or Tagalog. In our own short test, loanwords came back in English spelling: badyet as budget, kwarter as quarter, proyekto as project. That suits work notes, but it means a transcript mixes Cebuano spelling with English words, so don't be surprised to see both on one line.

Bisaya speakers mix in English and Tagalog freely. Automatic detection picks one language for the whole file, so keep the picker on Cebuano when Bisaya carries the conversation, and choose Filipino for a meeting held mostly in Tagalog. Typical files are voice messages from family working in Manila or abroad, barangay and parish meetings, local radio programs and research interviews in the Visayas and Mindanao. As of now, neither WhatsApp's nor Messenger's published list for their own voice message transcription includes Cebuano, so a voice message you have saved as a file can be uploaded here. SRT subtitles keep the Cebuano text with times from the spoken words.

Questions

What if my recording isn't in Cebuano?

Choose the language that is spoken, for example Filipino or English, or pick automatic detection. If the transcript sounds like another language, one click transcribes the file again in that language.

Is Bisaya the same as Cebuano here?

Yes. Choose Cebuano for anything you would call Bisaya or Binisaya, whether the speakers are from Cebu, Bohol or Davao. Hiligaynon (Ilonggo) and Waray are different languages and aren't in the list, so the Cebuano entry isn't meant for them.

Why do some words come out in English spelling?

Cebuano borrows many English words, and in our own test they came back spelled the English way: badyet as budget, proyekto as project. Native Cebuano words keep their Cebuano spelling. If you need the local spelling of a loanword, change it when you read the transcript through.

Should I pick Cebuano or Filipino?

Pick the language heard most in the recording, because detection chooses one per file. A family call or barangay meeting in Bisaya with some Tagalog and English should use Cebuano. A class or meeting held mostly in Tagalog should use Filipino.

Is Cebuano transcription free?

Yes, within the free limits: 6 h of transcription in total, up to 10 files a day, and the first 15 min of each transcript readable on the free plan. Sync Pro unlocks full transcripts.
