Catalan, Valencian and Spanish in the same recording

The transcript is written in Catalan (català) with its own spelling: the open and closed accents of à, è, é, ò and ó, the ç, and apostrophes as in l'escola or d'aquí. The geminate l·l carries a middle dot that is easy to lose whenever text is copied, so check words such as col·legi or il·lusió before the text goes anywhere public.

The Catalan entry stands for the language as it is spoken in Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and Andorra. Valencian (valencià) and Balearic recordings use the same choice. Regional verb endings and local words are the parts to read against the audio, as they would be in any transcript.

Meetings in Barcelona, Valencia or Palma often move between Catalan and Spanish, sometimes within one sentence. Each file is transcribed in one language, and automatic detection also settles on one language per file, so set the picker to whichever was spoken most. A council meeting held mostly in Catalan is best set to Catalan by hand.

Typical files are university lectures, interviews for local radio or a thesis, association and town council meetings, and voice messages. As of now, WhatsApp's published list for its own voice transcription doesn't include Catalan, so save the voice message and upload it here. The SRT subtitles keep the Catalan spelling, with times taken from the spoken words.

Questions

What if my file isn't Catalan?

Set the picker to the language that is spoken, or choose automatic detection. If the transcript reads like another language, such as Spanish, one click transcribes the same file again in that language, with no second upload.

Should I choose Catalan for a Valencian recording?

Yes. Valencian is covered by the Catalan entry in the language list, and the same goes for Balearic speech. Regional forms, such as some verb endings or local words, are the first things to read against the audio before you share the text.

What about Spanish mixed into Catalan speech?

Keep the picker on Catalan when most of the talk is Catalan. A file is transcribed in one language, so short Spanish phrases may be written the way they sound. A recording that is mostly Spanish should be set to Spanish instead.

Can I transcribe a Catalan WhatsApp voice message?
