How it works

  1. Choose your French recording: a lecture, an interview or a podcast episode.
  2. French is already selected, so just press Transcribe.
  3. Read the transcript by speaker, or download it as SRT subtitles.

French lectures, accents and punctuation

The transcript is written in French (français) with its accents and apostrophes, and follows the speech closely. Recordings from France, Belgium, Switzerland, Quebec and West Africa all go to the same French model. Regional words and strong accents are where a second read pays off, together with names of people and places.

French writing puts a space before ? ! : and ; in France but not in Quebec. The transcript may not follow the convention your readers expect, so if the text is going into a publication, adjust the punctuation once at the end rather than line by line.

Students record cours magistraux, researchers record entretiens, and podcasters want show notes. A lecture transcript with chapters is easier to revise from than the raw audio, and speaker turns keep the questions at the end of a class apart from the lecture itself. The text stays in French and is not translated; when it is right, use the SRT subtitles, which keep the French text with times from the spoken words.

Questions

What if my recording isn't in French?

Choose the language that is spoken, or pick automatic detection. If the transcript sounds like another language, one click transcribes the file again in that language.

Does it work with Quebec or African French?

Yes. All French recordings go to the same model, whatever the accent. Regional words and names are the parts to check against the audio before you publish or quote.

Can I transcribe a whole lecture?

Yes, up to 5 h and 512 MB per file. The transcript comes with chapters, so you can jump to the part of the course you want to revise. Split a longer recording at a break and upload the parts.

Is French transcription free?

Yes, within the free limits: 6 h of transcription in total, and the first 15 min of each transcript readable on the free plan. Sync Pro unlocks whole lectures.
