How it works

Swedish accents, English loans and Nordic neighbours

The transcript is written in Swedish (svenska) with å, ä and ö, which are separate letters in Swedish rather than decorated a and o. They change meaning, too: får is a sheep and far is a father, so a transcript is only usable when they are in the right place.

The picker entry is Swedish as a whole. Speech from Stockholm, Skåne, Norrland or Gothenburg all belongs under it, and so does Finland Swedish (finlandssvenska) from Helsinki or Ostrobothnia. Strong regional accents and local terms are still worth checking against the recording.

Swedish offices borrow English freely: a deadline, a meeting, feedback, a workshop. Keep the picker on Swedish when most of the talk is Swedish, and check how those loans are spelled. Norwegian and Danish are close enough for Swedes to follow, but they have their own entries; automatic detection picks one language per file, so choose Danish when most of the recording is Danish. Norwegian is in the list too, though our own short Norwegian test came back in Danish spelling.

Common files are interviews for an uppsats or a research project, team meetings, association meetings (föreningsmöten), lectures and podcast episodes. Questions

What if my file isn't Swedish?

Change the language picker to what is actually spoken, for example Danish, Finnish or English, or choose automatic detection. If the transcript sounds like another language, one click transcribes the file again in that language.

Does it handle Finland Swedish and strong regional accents?

Finland Swedish and regional Swedish from Skåne to Norrland are transcribed with the Swedish entry; there is no separate choice for them. Local place names and dialect terms are the parts to check against the recording before you quote the text.

What happens to English terms in Swedish speech?

Keep Swedish selected when most of the talk is Swedish. English terms that Swedes mix in, such as deadline or feedback, may come back in English or Swedish spelling, so check them before you quote the text. A recording that is mostly English, like an international team call, should use English instead.

Can I transcribe a Norwegian or Danish speaker with Swedish selected?

Pick the language most of the file is in, since SeaMeet transcribes each file in one language. For a Nordic meeting that is mainly Danish, choose Danish. Norwegian is in the list too, but our short Norwegian test came back in Danish spelling, so read such a transcript closely. Short comments from a neighbour in a Swedish meeting are worth a second read.
