Spoken Finnish, long vowels and Swedish speakers
The transcript is written in Finnish (suomi) with ä and ö, and with å where Swedish names such as Åbo appear. Finnish marks length by doubling letters, and it changes meaning: tuli, tuuli and tulli are fire, wind and customs. Those doubled letters are the first thing to check in names and key terms.
Finns rarely speak the way they write. In meetings and interviews you hear puhekieli, spoken Finnish: mä and sä instead of minä and sinä, me mennään instead of me menemme. Depending on the speaker, the transcript may keep some of these spoken forms, so decide whether your thesis quotes should stay close to speech or be tidied into kirjakieli, standard written Finnish, before you share them.
Finland is bilingual, and many workplaces switch between Finnish, Swedish and English. Automatic detection picks one language per file, so choose Finnish when most of the talk is Finnish, and choose Swedish for a recording of Finland-Swedish speakers.
Typical files are thesis and research interviews, team meetings, lectures and podcast episodes. On iPhone, WhatsApp's own voice transcription lists Finnish on newer iOS versions, but its Android list doesn't include it as of now. Questions
What if my file isn't Finnish?
Switch the language picker to the language that is spoken, for example Swedish, Estonian or English, or choose automatic detection. If the transcript sounds like another language, one click transcribes the file again in that language without a new upload.
Will the transcript be in spoken Finnish or in standard written Finnish?
It can vary with the speaker: in relaxed talk, spoken forms such as mä, sä or mennään may appear in the text. For interview quotes that may be exactly what you want; for a report, edit the passages you quote into standard written Finnish yourself.
My recording has Finland-Swedish speakers too. Which language do I pick?
Pick the language most of the recording is in. SeaMeet transcribes a file in one language, so a meeting that is mostly Swedish should use Swedish. If long parts are in each language, split the file and transcribe each part in its own language.
Can I use the result for a thesis interview?
Yes. Rename the speakers, for example Haastattelija and Haastateltava, once the whole transcript is readable, and the summary and chapters use those names. Check doubled letters and names against the recording before you quote anything.
