00:00 Kadri Tere, Mart. Kas sa jõudsid eilse koosoleku märkmed läbi vaadata?

00:05 Mart Jah, vaatasin.

How it works

  1. Choose your Estonian recording: a team meeting, a research interview or a lecture.
  2. Estonian is already selected in the language list, so press Transcribe.
  3. Read the transcript by speaker, or download it as SRT subtitles.

Estonian vowels, case endings and Russian in the room

The transcript is written in Estonian (eesti keel) with õ, ä, ö and ü, and with š and ž where borrowed names and terms use them. Estonian also shows length in the spelling by doubling letters, so lina (linen) and linna (of the town) are different words, and a transcript is only useful when those letters are right.

Estonian carries a lot of meaning in its endings: the same noun can appear in many cases, and a slip can sit in an ending rather than in the stem. When you check the text, read the endings of names, dates and places, for example whether a deadline was said as reedeks or reedel.

The picker entry is standard Estonian. Southern varieties such as Võro and Seto have no entry of their own and we haven't tested them; they will probably come out in standard Estonian spelling, so check those passages by ear. In Tallinn and Ida-Virumaa many meetings mix Estonian with Russian, and tech teams mix in English. Automatic detection picks one language per file, so choose the language most of the talk is in.

Common files are hybrid team meetings, thesis interviews, lectures and calls with family working in Finland. WhatsApp's published list of transcription languages doesn't include Estonian as of now, so a voice note can be saved and uploaded here instead.

Questions

What if my file isn't Estonian?

Set the language picker to what is spoken, for example Finnish, Russian or English, or choose automatic detection. If the transcript sounds like another language, one click transcribes the file again in that language, so you don't have to upload it twice.

Are õ, ä, ö and ü kept in the transcript?

Yes. The text is in normal Estonian spelling with õ, ä, ö and ü, and š and ž in loanwords. If they turn into odd symbols in another program, open or save the text as Unicode and the letters are back.

Our meeting is half Estonian and half Russian. What should I choose?

SeaMeet transcribes each file in one language, so pick the language that dominates. If the meeting really splits into long Estonian and Russian parts, cut the recording in two and transcribe each part in its own language, then read the borrowed phrases.

What should I check first in an Estonian transcript?

Read the case endings on names, places and dates, and long vowels or doubled consonants in key terms, because those carry the meaning. Rename the speakers once the whole transcript is readable, and the summary and chapters use the new names.

How much Estonian transcription is free?

A free account has 6 h of transcription in total. On the free plan the first 15 min of each transcript are readable, and Sync Pro unlocks the full text of every file.
