Bokmål, Nynorsk, dialects and what to check

Norwegian (norsk) is in the uploader's language list, and this page starts the picker on it. Written Norwegian has two standards, Bokmål and Nynorsk, while speech is dialect first: people from Bergen, Trøndelag or Northern Norway sound very different from Oslo and usually keep their dialect at work too. The picker has one Norwegian entry and no setting that asks for Nynorsk.

We haven't confirmed Norwegian output in our own short test yet. That test transcript came back in Danish spelling, with budgettet for budsjettet and næste for neste: readable, but wrong for a Norwegian document. Read every transcript before you share it, and look for Danish forms such as inden, endnu or projektet where Norwegian writes innen, ennå and prosjektet.

Norwegian offices take English terms on board without translating them, and Nordic calls slide between Norwegian, Swedish and Danish. A file is transcribed in one language, so pick the language most of the speakers use. Typical files are borettslag and association board meetings, research and job interviews, lectures and podcasts. As of now, WhatsApp's own voice transcription lists Norwegian on recent iPhone versions but not on Android; here the transcript is a file in your Library with speaker labels, a summary, chapters and SRT subtitles.

Questions

What if my file isn't Norwegian?

Change the picker to the language that is actually spoken, or choose automatic detection. If the text reads like another language, one click transcribes the same file again in that language, without uploading it a second time.

Why does my Norwegian transcript look Danish?

In our own short test the Norwegian transcript came out in Danish spelling, such as budgettet for budsjettet and inden for innen, so we haven't confirmed Norwegian output yet. Check the result closely. You can also try automatic detection on the same file and compare the two transcripts.

Can I get the transcript in Nynorsk?

There is one Norwegian entry in the picker and no Nynorsk setting. If you need Nynorsk, or dialect words spelled a particular way, treat the transcript as a draft and edit it into the written standard you use before it is published.

What about Swedish or Danish speakers in the same meeting?

Each file gets one language. Keep Norwegian when most of the meeting is Norwegian and check the Swedish or Danish turns against the audio; we haven't tested how they come out. If most people speak Danish or Swedish, choose that language instead.

Is Norwegian transcription free to try?
