Bahasa Melayu in Rumi, with English in the mix
The transcript is written in Bahasa Melayu in Rumi, the Latin alphabet used in schools, newspapers and messages across Malaysia, not in Jawi. In our own short test the Malay came back in Latin script. Nothing is translated: the text stays in the language that was spoken, so a lecture in Malay gives you Malay notes to work from.
Malaysians switch into English all the time, from single terms like slide, assignment or deadline to whole sentences in a lecture. Automatic detection picks one language for the whole file, so keep the picker on Malay when most of the talk is Malay and let the English stay in the mix; choose English when English carries the recording. Names, place names and course codes are worth a read before you share the text.
Indonesian has its own entry in the list. It sounds close, but spelling and everyday words differ, and some words change meaning: percuma means free in Malay and pointless in Indonesian. Choose Malay for recordings from Malaysia, Brunei or Singapore. Typical files are university lectures, ceramah and tazkirah, research interviews and voice notes from family groups. As of now, WhatsApp lists Malay for its own voice message transcripts on iPhone only, so on Android, or for a long voice note, save it as a file and upload it here. SRT subtitles keep the Malay text with times from the spoken words.

Questions
What if my recording isn't in Malay?
Choose the language that is spoken, for example Indonesian, English or Chinese, or pick automatic detection. If the transcript sounds like another language, one click transcribes the file again in that language.
Should I pick Malay or Indonesian for my recording?
Pick Malay for speakers from Malaysia, Brunei or Singapore, and Indonesian for speakers from Indonesia. Because the two languages are close, choosing the language yourself is the safer option. The transcript is written in the language you choose.
What happens to English in Malay speech?
Keep the picker on Malay when most of the conversation is Malay, even if people switch to English for a phrase or a sentence. Detection chooses one language per file, so a lecture that is mostly English should use English. Read mixed passages through before you share them.
Can I get the transcript in Jawi?
No. The transcript is written in Rumi, the Latin alphabet used for everyday Malay. If you need Jawi for a religious class or a school task, convert the checked text with a separate tool.
Is Malay transcription free?
Yes, within the free limits: 6 h of transcription in total, up to 10 files a day, and the first 15 min of each transcript readable on the free plan. Sync Pro unlocks full transcripts.
