Czech spelling, spoken Czech and research interviews

The transcript is written in Czech (čeština) with its háčeks and accents: č, ď, ě, ň, ř, š, ť, ž, and both ú and ů. Choose Czech, or let SeaMeet detect it. The output is ordinary written text you can quote once you have read it through.

Everyday spoken Czech differs from the written standard. People say dobrej instead of dobrý, or vokno instead of okno, and we have not tested which form a transcript will use; it may show either. If you quote someone in a thesis or an article, check those endings against the recording. Czech and Slovak are close enough that a mixed call may confuse automatic detection, so pick the language most of the speakers use rather than leaving it to chance.

In Czech universities, qualitative research often means hours of recorded interviews that have to be written out verbatim for a bachelor's or master's thesis. Other common files are municipal and association meetings, podcasts and oral history recordings with older relatives. WhatsApp's published list for its own voice transcription doesn't include Czech as of now, so a voice message can be saved and uploaded here. SRT subtitles keep the Czech letters and take their times from the spoken words.

Questions

What if my file isn't Czech?

Set the picker to the language actually spoken, for example Slovak, or choose automatic detection. If the result looks like the wrong language, one click transcribes the recording again in the language you select.

Does it write colloquial Czech or standard Czech?

We haven't tested colloquial Czech separately, so we can't promise either. A transcript may keep forms like dobrej or vokno, or write the standard dobrý and okno. Before quoting a respondent, compare the key sentences with the audio.

Can I use it for thesis interviews?

Yes. Upload each interview, keep Czech selected, and rename the speakers, for example Tazatel and Respondent, once the whole transcript is readable. The summary and chapters then use those names, which helps when you code the answers later.

My recording mixes Czech and Slovak. Which do I choose?

Each file is transcribed in one language. Choose the one most of the conversation is in. Sentences in the other language may come out in the spelling of the language you picked, so check them before you share the text.

Is Czech transcription free?

Within limits. A free account includes 6 h of transcription in total and shows the first 15 min of each transcript. Files can run up to 5 h. Sync Pro unlocks the rest of every transcript.
